WHAT IS BELOVED COMMUNITY?
The Beloved Community Longmont is a vision for a society rooted in the philosophy and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It is about a community that wants to see justice, reconciliation and love prevail over division, hate and dehumanization. Popularized by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the term “Beloved Community” is the result of learning, committing to and living, individually and collectively, Kingian nonviolence principles: Courage, Friendship and Understanding, Transformation, Justice, Love and Hope.
All are Welcome
Anyone who wants to work towards a community rooted in justice, love and reconciliation is welcome. We need everyone’s perspective and contributions to building a better community.
We invite each person to participate through learning, service, conversations and action to build the Beloved Community Longmont. Longmont is a wonderful city full of amazing people doing incredible things. The Beloved Community Longmont seeks to bring people together to strengthen impact through collaboration and a commitment to peaceful nonviolent transformation.

The Be Love Longmont Coalition is open to anyone who commits to The Principles of Nonviolence from the King Center and is interested in contributing to the building of beloved community in Longmont. The coalition includes non-profit agencies, faith communities, locally owned businesses, and community members. In the fall of 2024, St. Vrain Habitat for Humanity convened a small group of active and concerned community members after completing the King Center’s course, Nonviolence 365. Community building, local civic service and action and education are shared values of the coalition.
Fundamental tenets of Dr. King’s philosophy of nonviolence described in his first book, Stride Toward Freedom. Dr. King often said, he got his inspiration from Jesus Christ and his techniques from Mohandas K. Gandhi. These principles should be embraced as a lifestyle.
The Six Steps for Nonviolent Social Change are based on Dr. King’s nonviolent campaigns and teachings that emphasize love in action. Dr. King’s philosophy of nonviolence, as reviewed in the Six Principles of Nonviolence, guide these steps for social and interpersonal change.
